After completing formal education - or even without that pesky step - many of us have to learn how to qualify for a position in some company, that will keep us completely occupied for at least a good eight hours of the day.
Enter the rat race!
As if there weren’t too many things to learn about the job hunting process already, you know have to learn how to write a letter of intent for a job. Yes, the application, interview and job acceptance processes can be so demanding at times. But here is a lesser-known component that is not so frequently used.
So, how do you write a letter of intent and when do you use it?
Well, these are some of the questions, which we will answer for you today. Continue reading the details provided for you below.
About the Letter of Intent
If you are still in a haze about this piece of document, then let us first define, “What is a Letter of Intent?”
According to the online Business Dictionary, this is an “Interim agreement that summarizes the main points of a proposed deal, or confirms that a certain course of action is going to be taken.
Normally, it does not constitute a definitive contract but signifies a genuine interest in reaching the final agreement subject to due diligence, additional information or fulfillment of certain conditions.
The language used in writing a letter of intent is of vital importance, and determines whether it is only an expression of intent or an enforceable undertaking.”
As you can see this is not your typical cover letter. It might be similar, but it is not the same and is used in a different circumstance.
So, when do you send a letter of intent?
This is done if you want to reach out to a hiring manager about a position that was not advertised. For example, you are interested in working with Pepsi Co. as a brand manager.
However, they have not advertised the position on the internet or in any other media. In this case, you can write a letter of intent and send it in, along with your resume.
It is important that the letter clearly outline your interest in the company and your qualifications.
How to Write a Letter of Intent for Job
Now that you understand a little more about this document, let us explore how to construct one. At each stage, we will supply an example of what to do.
The Format of the Letter
Remember, a letter of intent for a job is not a cover letter. Therefore, you do not have to be so linear and formal in your composition of the document.
You do want to sell your skills and highlight what you are capable of, but it is not so much about any one position. It is a way to open the door to networking with a member of the organization.
If you are unsure about who that might be, pick up the phone and enquire or look it up on the internet.
However, verify that this person is still actually in that position, because some websites do have outdated information.
Next, do not provide more than one page of content. Make it out to a specific person, rather than to a department or the traditional “Dear sir or madam.”
Example:
"Dear Mr. Pringle,
I would like to indicate my interest in working with your company. Presently, I am the IT Manager of Deloitte Communications.”
Establishing Who You Are
When you begin your letter, try to make mention of not only what position you are interested in, but why you want to work in their company. It is also highly beneficial to provide a clear outline of how your skills can prove beneficial to the company’s objectives.
Examples:
"I am interested in a senior analyst position at your company, Neuron Ltd. It is an ideal post that is compatible with my information and communications background.”
Or
"I am applying for a summer job with your bank, Regional Savings Trust. Presently, I am in my third year at UMC University and working on my bachelor's degree in Finance and an associate in Management Studies."
Giving Substantial Background Information
After that introduction, you want to present a bit more information about what qualifies you for the job. Try to mention how your qualifications align with the company’s objectives.
It is essential that you prove that you have done your due diligence and you know enough information about their company.
Example:
"Dear Mr. Pringle,
I am interested in a senior analyst position at your company, Neuron Ltd. It is an ideal post that is compatible with my information and communications background.
I recognize that Neuron Ltd. is a leading manufacturer of digital devices, in this nation. Being the top nominee for the Syscon Digital Creator Award for 2016, 2017 and 2018, I believe I can add value to your overarching objectives to launch this country into the 22nd century.
For the last 5 years, I have worked on increasing my expertise in robotics and artificial intelligence. I also have two first degrees in Information Technology and Network Security from UMC University.
My years of working diligently with some of the top companies in this country have allowed me to develop incomparable skills in problem solving and management. Presently, I am team lead, supervising over 25 employees.”
Make Mention of Any Other Associated Expertise
If applicable, include another paragraph highlighting any other area of expertise. Do not be overly eager. Limit them to a maximum of three skill areas, using one-word descriptions. They must be relevant to the position of interest.
Example:
"I have insightful knowledge of Content Management Systems, Cloud Processing and White Hat Hacking, of which could be a positive asset to your company."
Or
"My three years of ranking in the top five, in the nation, for Network Security gives me the skills to do extremely well with your organization."
Call for Action
As you write the final paragraph, recapitulate why you are an ideal fit for the corporation. Request that the person, in receipt of your letter, look at your resume as well as any other enclosures included.
Articulate the next step and suggest a meeting to discuss in person, how you could be of benefit to the company.
State your intention to follow up and conclude the letter by expressing gratitude to the hiring manager for their consideration.
Example:
"I am eager to gain knowledge of all the available opportunities within your business. If it is permissible, I will contact you on Thursday, to follow up on my letter of intent. Again, thank you for your time."
Or
"Attached is my resume along with my portfolio. You can review my qualifications for a management position within your organization. I call to follow up on Monday morning, of next week. Thank you for your time and consideration."
